"Captivating Thanksgiving Beauty: Shooting Wild Turkeys’’

November 23,2023

On a crisp autumn Thanksgiving November day, as the morning light danced across the horizon, I found myself admiring an extraordinary sight in my backyard—an assembly of wild turkeys. Their presence, a blend of historic significance and natural marvel, immediately sparked a sense of wonder in me. So i decided to shoot them. With my camera. Their vibrant plumage and graceful movements against the backdrop of the autumn landscape made for an enchanting spectacle.

“I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual. It is surprising how contented one can be with nothing definite - only a sense of existence. Well, anything for variety. I am ready to try this for the next ten thousand years, and exhaust it. How sweet to think of! my extremities well charred, and my intellectual part too, so that there is no danger of worm or rot for a long while. My breath is sweet to me. O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches. No run on my bank can drain it, for my wealth is not possession but enjoyment.” ― Henry David Thoreau

Wild turkeys, I pondered, are not just emblematic of Thanksgiving dinners and feasts but are also woven into the historical fabric of North America. Once on the brink of extinction due to rampant hunting and habitat loss, wild turkeys have made a remarkable comeback, standing as a testament to successful conservation efforts. Their revival speaks not only to the resilience of the species but also to the human commitment to preserving the natural world.

With every click of the shutter, I immortalized their elegance, preserving the moment without causing harm. The choice to appreciate and preserve rather than disrupt and destroy felt like an ode to gratitude for the natural world, a celebration of the everyday magnificence that surrounds us.

Their feathers, a tapestry of earthy tones and iridescent hues, reflected the brilliance of the autumn sun.

If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough. Meister Eckhart

Wild turkeys may scratch at the soil while foraging, aiding in soil aeration. This can be beneficial for soil health and nutrient distribution, indirectly benefiting plants in gardens or agricultural areas. Wild turkeys have an appetite for insects, including pests that can damage crops. They can help control insect populations naturally, reducing the need for pesticides in agricultural areas. Maintaining a healthy and balanced population of wild turkeys within their natural habitats can contribute to ecological diversity and indirectly support certain aspects of gardening and agriculture.

A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues. Marcus Tullius Cicero

Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds. Theodore Roosevelt

In the tapestry of the natural world, I saw the fingerprints of a Creator—the God who intricately designed each feather, shaped each landscape, and orchestrated the delicate balance of ecosystems. Resurrection. Thanksgiving, then, became eucharist. The word "Eucharist" originates from the Greek word "eukharistia," which means "thanksgiving" or "gratitude." not just a celebration of a bountiful harvest but a recognition of the everyday miracles and wonders that grace our lives.

Give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation. Brian Tracy

In this season of thanksgiving, the encounter with these wild turkeys served as a poignant reminder to cherish and protect the gifts that surround us. It beckoned a reflection on the inherent beauty woven into every aspect of the world God has crafted—an invitation to be grateful for the majesty of creation, big and small.

Thankfulness, I realized, goes beyond the grand gestures and prestigious events; it resides in the everyday beauty that often goes unnoticed.

“After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one's own relations.” ― Oscar Wilde, A Woman of No Importance

Living artfully and gratefully isn't confined to a single day; it's a daily practice of finding beauty in the ordinary and embracing gratitude for life's nuances, enriching our existence every day beyond the bounds of any holiday celebration. Embracing creativity in our actions and nurturing gratitude in our hearts year-round allows us to paint a canvas of joy, kindness, and appreciation throughout life's journey.

Remember God’s bounty in the year. String the pearls of His favor. Hide the dark parts, except so far as they are breaking out in light! Give this one day to thanks, to joy, to gratitude! Henry Ward Beecher
