Things to Do and see in Duluth "Sunlit Escapes and Rainy Revelations: A Duluth Weekend to Remember"

Updated: Sep 3

One beautiful sunny weekend, my two friends and I decided to escape the daily grind and take a trip to Duluth. The allure of Lake Superior, the promise of scenic views, and the charm of the city had been calling to us for weeks. We packed our bags and set off, eager to explore the area and soak in everything Duluth had to offer.Continue reading to discover what made our must-see to believe it list.

Watching doves at the Duluth Wall by the train tracks really ups the ambiance—who knew birds and rails could be so artsy?
The drive up was beautiful, with the landscape lining the highway ablaze in shades of yellow, purple, and green. We arrived in Duluth by late evening, and after checking into our hotel, we set out to explore. Our hotel was a quaint place with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The walls were adorned with art—beautiful, haunting portraits of people who had gone missing over the years. The art was both captivating and a bit eerie, each piece telling its own story, whispering of lives lived and paths lost. It was a poignant reminder of the fragility of life, but it added a unique character to the place, making it unlike any hotel we had ever stayed in.

After settling in, we ventured out to explore Canal Park. We wandered along the lakeshore, taking in the breathtaking views of Lake Superior, its waters stretching out endlessly, reflecting the gray skies above. We visited the Aerial Lift Bridge, watched ships glide into the harbor, and enjoyed the cool, crisp air that hinted at the coming winter. We laughed, took photos, and felt the weight of the world lift from our shoulders as we immersed ourselves in the beauty around us.
For lunch, we found a cozy little café overlooking the lake. We indulged in comfort codfish and chips and of course, some cold drinks to keep the chill at bay. The conversation flowed easily as we shared stories and reminisced about old times, our laughter filling the atmosphere.
That evening, as we made our way back to the hotel, ascending the hills of Duluth, it seemed as though we had stumbled into a scene from a Hollywood movie. Climbing higher, the illuminated bridge came into view, and suddenly, it felt as if we were no longer in flat Minnesota but rather somewhere between LA and San Francisco. Duluth truly does resemble California, minus the frenzy—though, let's keep that between us and not mention it to our Silicon Valley friends.
The art on the walls seemed to take on a different light in the evening glow, as if the portraits were watching over us, guardians of our restful night. We talked late into the night, tucked in our beds, the faint hum of the city outside a gentle lullaby. We ate my Angel Food Cake. Messge me for recipe which is the easiest Cake ever.
The next day, after a leisurely breakfast, we packed up and began the journey home. The skies had darkened, and a sense of calm settled over us as we drove. Suddenly, the clouds opened up, and a downpour caught us by surprise. The rain hammered against the windshield, making it hard to see the road ahead. As the wipers worked furiously to clear the view, the song "Missing" by Everything But The Girl came on the radio. We sat in silence as the lyrics flowed through the car: "And I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain..." and I couldn't help but ponder the oxymoron in those words. The words seemed to echo the melancholy of the rain-soaked landscape around us, blending perfectly with the rhythm of the raindrops. It was a moment of unexpected beauty, the kind that sticks with you long after the journey ends.

As we drove on through the rain, we knew that this trip would be one we’d remember for a long time. Duluth had given us a weekend of joy, reflection, and connection—a perfect escape with friends, etched into our hearts like the art on the hotel walls.
